As the field of Sports Medicine evolves, the ability to evaluate and treat musculoskeletal injuries is becoming increasingly elaborate. The ultrasound machine has been widely used in many fields of medicine for quite sometime, but its usefulness in sports medicine is increasing continuously as we uncover new grounds. In the hands of a skilled practitioner, the ultrasound machine can be utilized as a very accurate and efficient extension of the physical exam, making it possible to evaluate injuries in real time. This not only enables clinical correlation with the patient’s history and physical exam, but also allows for dynamic imaging (viewing internal structures during movement, such as witnessing a shoulder that impinges during certain motions). Another exciting use of musculoskeletal ultrasound is Ultrasound guided injections, whereby the ultrasound machine may be used to guide injections into the precise area of injury. This can not only increase the effectiveness of the procedure, but it also makes it safer by helping to avoid adjacent structures (ie., nerve or blood vessel) from inadvertent damage.
