Sports Medicine

Sports Medicine is a widely used term, but only a very small percentage of physicians are actually certified in sports medicine through their specialty board. Also known as Primary Care Sports Medicine, this is the only medical specialty that provides comprehensive care (both musculoskeletal and medical) for athletes and other active individuals.
Primary care sports medicine has become the preferred specialty for team physician coverage of collegiate, professional, and Olympic teams.

Why Choose a Sports Medicine Physician?

Sports Medicine Physicians receive highly specialized medical training in the care of athletes and other active individuals. These physicians are unique in that they have expertise in comprehensive musculoskeletal evaluation and non-surgical treatment, as well as the specialized management of medical issues in the active population.

The advanced knowledge and training of the musculoskeletal system gives sports medicine physicians a better understanding of how an injury or illness in one part of the body can affect another part of the body. Therefore Sports Medicine Physicians have a therapeutic and diagnostic advantage.

More than 85 percent of muscle and joint injuries don’t require surgery. Sports Medicine Physicians have the highest level of specialization in providing non-surgical treatment for such injuries.

Sports Medicine Physicians also care for medical conditions that affect activity, such as asthma, arthritis, nutrition problems and poor fitness. They also advise patients on how to prevent injuries and become healthier.
